All about Broadway's Tony Awards 2013; That and Cindy Fernandez, Winner of my blog's contest...

On the day of the Puerto Rican day parade, what better way to celebrate than the Tony Awards? This is the best gift for those who love theater and dream of more stories told through the magic of LIVE THEATRE. What a great CELEBRATION, of artists. Artists, "You lift our culture with your artistry" as Judith Light said tonight.

The first winner of the night is Cindy Fernandez as she is taking our 2 tickets to Monsters University for her reply to my blog. Cindy, Thank you for your participation!

I am SO inspired as I see that we CAN make great Art with a Purpose while achieving commercial success! As Diane Paulus said tonight "Creativity is a form of knowledge" Once, Pippin, and Peter and the Star Catcher are GREAT examples of this balance!

The Tony Awards Opening was brilliant!
I saw it live in the dress rehearsal and was thrilled to see it on TV with the same power and even greater detail. Seeing faces I love like my dear Nina Lafarga and Shannon Lewis was a reminder of the passion each performer brings to each project. The artistry and talent of Lin Manuel Miranda was so present and clear to me both in the opening and closing of the show.  The rhyme, the style, the heart, and the comment about "that KID watching... THAT WAS ME", all of it, brilliant.

Mike Tyson, brought 2 of my passions together, Boxing and Broadway. And soon I will have more of it as Rocky, The Musical is coming to Broadway with my fellow Boricua, Marcos Santana involved and representing! :-)

"It's All Happening" from Bring It On, certainly presented another way of evolving art on the stage with the spectacular cheerleading stunts. Congrats Andy Blankenbuehler, Stephanie Klemons, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alex Lacamoire and everyone involved in Bring it On! I simply love seeing the evolution and dedication among people who strive to make art with a purpose together.

Next up to bat, Motown, time for Patti Wilcox and Warren Adams' work to shine on the big screen!

With such great talent on stage like Dionne Dadrinelle Figgins, Jamal Story, Daniel J. Watts, Marielys Molina, Ephraim Sykes and so many other great dancers who I admire and respect. Motown has a wonderful light on stage.

The kids from Matilda filled the stage with an overabundance of energy and talented youth. More kids were lighting up the stage with Annie, followed by A Christmas Story with a kid tapping his life on the stage of Radio City. For me that little kid was taller than a giant and stronger than Mike Tyson, he was simply amazing. KIDS ARE OUR FUTURE... kids are showing us what stage honesty is all about.

Rodger's + Hammersteins Cinderella's performance shows the clear reason why it won for Best Costume design by showing us theatre magic onstage at the Tony Awards. The 2 seemless dress transformations were fantastic. Congratulations to our very own Salgado Productions' adviser Jill Furman for the Tony win and the success of Cinderella.

This morning at the rehearsal, Diane Paulus, who I had the privilege of seeing at work with Sergio during our production of Cape Man at the Public Theatre, walked by determined and focused. Seeing her working nonstop inspires me each time and today I felt like she made history winning best Direction. I recently went to a lecture of hers about the making of Pippin at the Harvard Club of NYC and I developed an even further admiration for the commitment she brings to every step of the process.

Laura Benanti as always hilarious. Pippin's presentation reminded us that we have Magic to do, as we are looking to find 'Our corner of the sky'. Broadway history was onstage when Hal Prince presented Phantom of the Opera. This classic was presented stunningly with new technology at CBS.

Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical went to Billy Porter and he left his heart and his passion onstage with his acceptance speech and performance followed by The award for Best Choreography that went to Jerry Mitchell for Kinky Boots. This was a tight race with Andy Blankenbuhler,  Chet Walker and Peter Darling as they all did such a great job. I can't wait to see latino example Sergio Trujillo winning his Tony for his Broadway excellence soon!!!!

Cyndi Lauper's 'True Colors' was great but seeing the face of Joan Stein during the memory of those we lost, was both heart breaking and inspiring. This wonderful woman was a hard worker and always had a smile on her face, she came to support our workshop of Amigo Duende and had so many ideas, plans and goals and the universe took her away too fast.

Although Once's, participation was affected by commercials for me it is simply a great example of perfect story telling when you really get to see the show. The Tony Awards Finale was another master piece by Lin Manuel Miranda and Best Musical went to Kinky Boots!

At the end we are the true winners, we who get a chance to taste all that's out there. Even if you never get a chance to fly to NYC and see a live show, the Tony Awards gives us a real sense of the power of the industry of theatre.

Thank you Broadway League, American Theater Wing, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, Viva Broadway and EVERY ONE WHO MAKES BROADWAY THE WONDERFUL COMMUNITY THAT IT IS.

Now, Show your TRUE COLORS, Don't be afraid to make ART WITH A PURPOSE, "With great power comes great responsibility" and as Tracy Letts said "WE ARE THE ONES WHO SAY IT TO THEIR FACES AND WE HAVE A UNIQUE RESPONSIBILITY" with the Art we make, and that is so true my friends!
