The Tony Awards
As we are only 2 days away from the selection of the best Broadway scripts, scores, directors, actors, musicals and plays, something came to my mind....
In case you don't know yet who is nominated for the Tony Awards.

What if there was a Tony award for the production that the audience feels made art with the most purpose?
A production capable of not sacrificing its commercial potential on the great white way while never losing the integrity of its art and its purpose.
I have had the honor of being part of some wonderful shows on and off Broadway but nothing like the process of creating the musical In the Heights. There was such a unique team of young, hungry artists that were balancing the act of creating art and at the same time were sharing their heart and their passion. All of this facilitated by an experienced team of successful producers who were eager to support new jewels of art such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Quiara Alegria Hudes, Tommy Kail, Andy Blankenbuehler, Bill Sherman and Alex Lacamoire. I learned so much by watching, working with and just being around this team that did indeed accomplish creating art with a purpose that was a hit Broadway show.
I am sure there are many other productions that beyond aiming for the capital gain of a Broadway hit also have a solid focus on the heart of it all, its art, its purpose and its contribution to this world.
If there was an award for this and we were responsible to decide the winner, who would you pick in this year's Tonys?
I leave my blog to you and know that I will learn from your comments and decisions and will be able to evolve the making of Salgado Production’s own art with a purpose.
NOW, I will give something in return...
Luis Salgado with Todo Broadway in two different years as host for Tonys' in Spanish |
We will pick a winner from all the comments left based on the
integrity of its answer and award them with a pair of advance screening
movie tickets to the screening of the new Disney/Pixar movie, Monsters University.

This was a great blog! Unfortunately I'm not in New York so I can't say who should win or not experience-wise. But I know from videos I've seen that it's going to be a tight race with Patina Miller conquering the role of Leading Player and Laura Osnes's sweet, sincere performance, and Stephanie J. Block's powerhouse vocals and performance. Not to mention the amazing Billy Porter verses the crazy role of Bertie Carvel in Matilda. So many amazing roles and noteworthy actors.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your comment! Where are you reading us from?
DeleteReading this I immediately thought of, "The Other Place". The production wasn't nominated for best play but its lead actress, Laurie Metcalf, was.
ReplyDeleteThe show takes place at a conference where Juliana, a biophysicist, is giving a lecture on a new miracle drug for dementia. Throughout the course of the play Juliana goes from walking all over those around her, to needing those same people to get through day to day life.
Okay so I know it doesn't sound interesting but hear me out! I walked into the theatre blindly! I had no idea what the show as about. A friend of mine got tickets and I joined her for what turned out to be a much unexpected evening!
Although I’m about 30 years away from ever developing dementia this is what I learned:
-Always treat people with kindness (you never know what they are going through or when you might need them)
-Remember that it isn’t always about you! No matter the journey (health scare, personal growth etc.) you are not alone. Be compassionate and respectful for those going on that journey with you!
- Ageism! Older people sometimes have a disdain for the young (they can be loud, obnoxious, rude); and the young sometimes don’t respect the older (they are slower, sometimes cranky, think they know it all). But this show is a good reminder that no matter what your age, we are all the same. We are born, we explore and make stupid mistakes in our youth, we become older and wiser and then we pass on. Make friends with someone older or younger than you! You will always learn something, because even though we are similar, no two journeys are the same.
- Life is fragile and beautiful! Love it, breathe it, and appreciate it; DO SOMETHING PURPOSEFUL because you only get one shot!
By the end of the play I looked around and realized that I was sitting in a sea of white clouds; a handful of young audience members, dispersed among a much older crowed. There was silence and yet a collective sigh and emotional embrace throughout the theatre. It was beautiful to feel so connected to each other. I walked out feeling a respect and honor to be part of that audience, of that moment.
What a wonderful, perfect and empowering comment. THANK YOU for sharing it with us!
DeleteI want to say Pippin. It's an incredible show and empowering story about the journey of LIFE...
