Embracing questions as a tool for growth...
Remember when you were a little kid and you would ask your parents "Why?" about something (or everything) and your parent's answer would be, "Because I say so!"
Wait! Or was that just me?
Regardless, I grew up never wanting to be that way, never wanting to have the answer I receive or give be "because I say so". Although, I have learned as I have grown, that at times in certain situations this is the answer that will allow action and progress to move forward. But for the most part, if there is purpose in the work there will always be an honest reason to give when developing, building, constructing or giving birth to something new.
I am blessed, as I have a smart, active, and inspiring group of advisers that I can always trust to ask me questions. I am just one person with a dream and a passion and we already know “no man is an island”. I depend on the various passions, talents and points of view of those around me in order to grow, question and catch my own flaws. I think that a powerful way to provoke art is by asking; "PORQUE?"
So when I was asked this week "What is art with a purpose to YOU?" I had no other choice but to respond with “You tell me what you think it means.”
Questions are necessary in order to evolve, to become a better artist and a better human being. Question everything. Is our system still effective? Are we accomplishing our mission? Is this story universal? Who is the target audience? Is this the right Director, Choreographer, Marketing idea, Contract, Process????? So many questions and we must be ready for all of them, even the hard ones. I want to make sure Salgado Productions; producers, directors, choreographers, writers, actors, the whole team as well as the process itself embraces questions as a tool to make something better.
For example, I asked the question about the Tonys in last weeks’ blog:
“What if there was a Tony award for the production that the audience feels made art with the most purpose?” If there was an award for this and we were responsible to decide the winner, who would you pick in this year's Tonys?”
The idea was not to judge what show had purpose and what show did not, but perhaps the word MOST got in the way...
Perhaps my real question is:
How did a specific show touch you in such a way that you were so affected and inspired due to it's Art with a Purpose? in other words (Thanks Peter Flynn) What purpose resonates with you from a production and why?"
I love and value art and yes, in my mind art itself is purposeful, for sure. I just want to learn, grow, share ideas, listen to point of views, I never expect you to agree with me. I ask in order to stay open to receive the answers that you and the universe bring and learn from them.
So, lets try this I ask, and I believe we can ask this forever anytime and anyplace:
How were you/your community moved, inspired or affected this season with the unique purpose that each production had, any production, local, touring, Broadway, off -Broadway, school productions?
Beyond the amazing time we had and the entertaining component each show brings to the table let’s take a second and talk about its purpose and its impact on you.
Tell us your stories, we want to hear from those who are passionate about the arts no matter what you have to say about it. Just remember don’t exclude, or divide points of view, but be open and receptive to all views.
