Driving the action forward and getting inspired

Driving the action forward

This is my second Festival production as a director in less than a year. Developing a new musical theatre piece is always an adventure and being part of the Venus/Adonis Theater Festival this year is feeling more and more like a blessing. I feel like I am back in college! It's been a great adventure and an educational journey.

In the past few years I have been able to create and develop some really big projects including the Peruvian success Candela: Fuerza y Pasion  and Aniversario Sin Cuenta.

But there is something unique about the making of original musical theatre with a really tight budget in a city like NY. I think the key is to focus on what really matters, THE STORY and then driving the action forward.

The Journey starts with the writers

It's super important to develop a healthy communication with the creators of the show. It's their baby that they have trusted me and my company with it, so RESPECTING their material and being sensible to the vulnerabilities of the work is crucial. It's also crucial to be as honest as possible and discover both what works and what doesn't.

I have been blessed with great collaborators thus far in these festivals. In my past show, Song of Solomon the writers Andrew and Neil were extremely pro-active. Their passion and desire to make a great show was one of our strongest tools, plus their MUSIC was SOOO UNIQUE! Now with Catherine and Vatrena I feel pretty much the same with an another level of trust as the work is still developing and they are on the other side of the country .

It's been inspiring to read their comments regarding our work:

"Luis has positively contributed to the piece from the very first conversation.  In the first five minutes of the very first conversation, he zeroed in on the heart of the project and immediately set about up-leveling it.  He has worked closely with us, respectfully examining the everything from tones of various songs to the motives of the characters.  Asking the important questions about the piece.  Challenging, Inspiring and drawing out the best from the writers, while respecting our vision". – Catherine Hurd

"I feel that if it were not for Salgado Productions, we might not be doing this play at all in the Venus Adonis Festival. We are in California, and there's no way we could produce "Zuccotti Park" from here.  It's such a relief, after working so hard,  to hand over your musical and know that it is in capable hands, and you can trust that it will turn out to be a professional presentation that you can be proud of". – Vatrena King

I take this in and continue to embrace the role and responsibility I want to have with my art and with Salgado Productions. With that, I also need spaces to further my vision and growth and could not be happier to find it with some masters I very much admire.

Seeking a space to learn and grow:

In the journey we all have mentors and inspirations that drive us forward. Sometimes the timing of projects could not be better. This pass week I was with two great artists, working as associate to the talented Sergio Trujillo next to director Moises Kaufman. The simple exercise of being in another rehearsal helping tell a Story and then in my own room with the task and responsibilities of guiding yet another musical forward was the perfect balance needed for my journey.

How energized did I go to work each day?

Ask the cast of Zuccotti Park... REALLY...
some days was such a thrill to go to another 6 hours of REH after a 10 to 6 schedule...
My heart was simply filled!

So, I think as you drive the action forward it's important to step back and see art or be part of other processes that can inspire you to be better.

As I study Directing i read this quote: “Ultimately, the director is a creator of communities— someone who can recognize talent and inspire the very best from other artists, lead them but welcome their contributions, and make everyone feel they are important partners” and I am proud to say that this has very well been accomplished!
