What an incredible month of inspiration, empowerment, going beyond and making ART WITH A PURPOSE.
What an incredible month of inspiration, empowerment, going beyond and making ART WITH A PURPOSE.
Some of te deepest Purpose by the way... To fully be alive and to fully explore ART! Through this collaborative process R.Evolución Latina empowered our Latin community from around the world, we honored and celebrated the legacy of Raul Julia who proved that the “impossible” dream is indeed possible. 36 hungry artists have embraced this opportunity to grow, evolve and experience something new.
To devise and direct TO BE OR NOT TO BE - A SHAKESPEAREAN EXPERIENCE for revolution latina was a re-assurance that we must always follow our HEART!
The collaboration with Ian Hersey and Leon Ingulsrud was wonderful and we are already dreaming of whats next!
Seeing how people perceived the work has been inspiring... "All these talented artists were under the guidance of the most esteemed Luis Salgado for an entire month. Talk about dedication and stamina! I knew it would be great but I wasn’t too sure how Shakespeare would get a latin flair. I must say with all honesty that I was literally moved to tears because what I witnessed was pure beauty, exalted energy and above all love". - Guadalupe Macias
The spirit of Raul Julia, -one of the first latinos to thrive at classic Shakespearean work at The Public Theater in NYC- guided the characters into the light and self-acceptance they need to open the doors of possibilities.
The EXPERIENCE explored the experience of being an immigrant in the US, facing the challenge of the English language, finding place in society, and a sense of belonging.
The creative team was fantastic and magical in every aspect possible. I feel so blessed with choreographers Valeria Cossu, Daniel Fetecua, Gabriela Garcia, Matt Steffens, Jaime Lozano and music director Desmar Guevara from our partners of Pregones Theatre.
Why a Devised piece? it was all about empowering 36 artists to explore their hearts, their talent and their opportunities .
More than half of our cast DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH and they had been challenged with the language. The past weeks have exposed them to the realities of what it is to be a migrant in the states. Young artists from Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Chile and many other places have had to survive in a room full of English, Shakespeare and new rhythms in this world of art. Art that they love and think they know, but then are suddenly confronted with the conflict of LANGUAGE!
This is a reflection of the challenges so many experience in our current society. Today, we see what comes out of the confusion and clarity, but this is a HUMAN EXPERIENCE. Today, we humbly share that experience with YOU.
The experience has mattered... We are often called crazy, limited to fail, demand that we be SAFE. This month they PLAYED, they went crazy and challenge the status quo while they attempt to understand, grow, evolve in something that’s not theirs, not conformable and not easy. We are gave them a GIANT CHALLENGE. All of our teachers, choreographers and consultants have asked these artists to take risks. Asked a non singer to sing, a non dancer to dance, a non actor or non English or Spanish speaker to speak or act in a language that is not theirs… BRAVO for all of them for going beyond!
I will miss them, My heart is filled with love for them and I Thank each and everyone of them for being part of our ensemble, for risking with us, for sharing with us. Our hearts are full and each of us sees the importance of Art in this world.
When we listen to each other as humans, magic could happen…
